In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Mangaluru police have seized MDMA worth Rs 16 lakh and arrested two individuals suspected of peddling the narcotic. The operation, conducted on the outskirts of the city, led to the recovery of a substantial quantity of the synthetic drug.
Details of the Seizure
The police acted on a tip-off and intercepted the suspects near a commercial area. During the search, authorities found 160 grams of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, with an estimated street value of Rs 16 lakh. The two accused, identified as residents of Mangaluru, were taken into custody immediately.
Ongoing Investigation
According to senior police officials, the arrested individuals are part of a larger drug trafficking network operating in the region. The police suspect that several other individuals are involved in the supply chain, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend them. “We are interrogating the accused to trace the source of the drugs and other members of the syndicate,” a police spokesperson stated.
The accused have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and will be produced before a local court. The police have also launched a search for other suspects who may have fled the scene.
Community Impact
This seizure comes amid growing concerns over drug abuse among youth in coastal Karnataka. Authorities have intensified patrolling and surveillance in vulnerable areas to curb the menace. The police have urged citizens to report any suspicious activities related to drug trafficking.
Further investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected in the coming days. The police have assured the public that they are committed to dismantling the drug network completely.
