Manipur Security Forces Conduct Major Seizures in Dual Anti-Insurgency Operations

In a significant crackdown, security forces in Manipur have arrested two individuals and confiscated a substantial cache of arms, explosives, and poppy seeds in two separate operations conducted in the state's volatile districts. The actions underscore the ongoing efforts to curb illicit activities and restore stability in the region, which has been grappling with ethnic strife for over two years.

Arrests and Seizures in Churachandpur District

According to a police statement, the first operation took place on Friday in the T Bangla MVCP area under the jurisdiction of the Churachandpur Police Station. Security forces apprehended two persons and seized a modified carbine, a 9 mm pistol, and 36 sacks containing approximately 1,800 kilograms of poppy seeds. Additionally, two vehicles were confiscated from the suspects during the raid.

Weapons Recovery in Chandel District

In a parallel operation, security forces recovered a significant arsenal from the forest area near Taijang village, which falls under the Chakpikarong Police Station limits in Chandel district. The seized items included an AK-47 rifle, four country-made guns along with their magazines, seven mortars, improvised explosive device (IED)-making materials weighing about 4 kilograms, and five walkie-talkie sets. This recovery highlights the persistent threat posed by armed groups in the region.

Context of Ongoing Ethnic Violence

These operations are part of a broader initiative by security forces, who have been conducting extensive search operations across Manipur since ethnic violence erupted two years ago. The conflict, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, has resulted in over 250 fatalities and displaced thousands of people, rendering many homeless since May 2023. The recent seizures aim to disrupt the supply chains of weapons and narcotics that often fuel such unrest.

Police officials emphasized that these actions are crucial for maintaining law and order and preventing further escalation of violence. The recovery of poppy seeds, in particular, points to the intersection of drug trafficking and insurgency, which has been a longstanding concern in the northeastern states of India.

The security forces remain vigilant, with continuous patrols and intelligence-gathering efforts to preempt any potential threats. Authorities have urged the public to cooperate and report any suspicious activities to help restore peace in the region.
