Police personnel in Coimbatore acted swiftly on Saturday to prevent a drastic act of protest at the city police commissioner's office premises. A 38-year-old man attempted to set himself on fire, alleging a significant financial fraud and subsequent police inaction regarding his complaint.
Dramatic Intervention at Police Headquarters
The individual, identified as Mohammed Yasin from Aranthangi in Pudukottai district, currently works at a hotel in Pollachi. On Saturday morning, he entered the premises of the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner's office. In a shocking turn of events, he doused himself with petrol and was in the process of attempting self-immolation when alert police staff on duty intervened and stopped him.
Allegations of Fraud and Assault
During preliminary inquiries, Yasin narrated a harrowing tale of deception and violence. He stated that he had paid Rs 4.50 lakh to a man named Mohammed Shalik of Pollachi for the purchase of a piece of land. According to Yasin, Shalik later refused to register the land in his name and was also unwilling to return the substantial sum of money.
The situation escalated further when Yasin confronted Shalik about the repayment on Friday. He alleged that a gang of six individuals attacked him, leaving him injured and bleeding. Distraught and seeking justice, Yasin then approached the Anamalai police station to file a formal complaint regarding both the fraud and the assault.
Claim of Police Inaction Leads to Desperate Step
Yasin's desperation stemmed from his claim that the Anamalai police refused to register his case. Feeling helpless and with no other recourse, he decided to take the extreme step of attempting self-immolation at the city police commissioner's office to draw attention to his plight.
Following the intervention and his subsequent statement, the police took procedural action. Since the Anamalai police station falls under the jurisdiction of the Superintendent of Police (SP), Yasin was sent to the SP's office for further investigation and appropriate action regarding his allegations.
This incident highlights a severe case of alleged land fraud and raises questions about grievance redressal mechanisms. The Coimbatore police's prompt action averted a tragedy, but the underlying issues of the financial dispute and the allegations against the Anamalai police now require thorough investigation.
