The Shri Simeshwar Rashtroli Brahmin Devasthan temple in Acoi, Mapusa, has been ordered closed by the sub-divisional magistrate following a violent clash that resulted in seven individuals sustaining injuries. Deputy Collector Varsha Parab issued the directive, mandating the immediate closure of the temple to the public until further notice to prevent any escalation of law and order issues.
Escalation of a Longstanding Dispute
The violent incident, which erupted on the night of April 1, marks a significant escalation in a dispute that has been ongoing for over eighteen months. The clash reportedly stemmed from a conflict over the installation of CCTV cameras and electric lighting within the temple premises by one faction. This action triggered a confrontation that quickly turned violent, leading to multiple injuries.
Legal Actions and Failed Reconciliation
In the aftermath of the clash, cross-complaints have been formally filed against a total of twenty-two persons. These include fifteen individuals from one group and seven from the opposing faction, with charges encompassing assault and rioting. Authorities are actively investigating the incident to determine the full scope of involvement and culpability.
A conciliation meeting held on April 6 aimed to resolve the dispute but ended in failure. During the meeting, both sides asserted exclusive ownership and management rights over the temple, demonstrating a deep-seated rift that has proven resistant to mediation efforts.
Root Cause: Rivalry Over Temple Trust Committee
At the heart of this prolonged conflict is a fierce rivalry concerning the management of the temple's seven-member trust committee. One faction is led by Sairaj Toraskar, who heads the committee, while the opposing group is spearheaded by Jayesh Kalangutkar. This power struggle over control and decision-making authority has fueled tensions, ultimately culminating in the recent violent outbreak.
