Violent Clash Erupts at Mapusa Temple Over Trust Dispute, Five Injured
A simmering dispute over the registration and legitimacy of the Shree Simeshwar Rashtroli Brahmin Sati Dev Gramastha Devasthan temple trust in Acoi, Mapusa, turned violent late on Wednesday, resulting in injuries to at least five individuals. The incident has heightened tensions in the area, prompting a significant police response to restore calm.
Escalation Over CCTV Installation Sparks Physical Confrontation
According to police reports, the clash erupted when one faction attempted to install CCTV cameras on the temple premises. This move was met with fierce objections from a rival group that has contested the authority of the first faction for the past two years. The heated argument between the two sides quickly escalated into a physical scuffle and assault, leading to chaos at the religious site.
The injured parties include two men and three women, all of whom are currently undergoing medical treatment at the Goa Medical College (GMC). Authorities have confirmed that their conditions are being monitored, though specific details on the severity of injuries have not been disclosed publicly.
Police Deployment Intensifies to Prevent Further Violence
In response to the violent outbreak, heavy police deployment has been stationed at the temple to prevent further flare-ups and maintain law and order. Officers are actively monitoring the situation to ensure that tensions do not reignite, with a focus on de-escalating the conflict between the disputing groups.
The long-standing nature of this trust dispute, which has been ongoing for approximately two years, underscores the deep-seated divisions within the community. The installation of CCTV cameras served as a flashpoint, highlighting broader issues of control and legitimacy over the temple's management and operations.
Local residents have expressed concern over the violence, calling for a peaceful resolution to the trust issues. Authorities are urging both factions to engage in dialogue and seek legal avenues to resolve their differences, rather than resorting to physical confrontations that endanger public safety.
