A marriage racket has been busted in Madhya Pradesh, with a couple arrested for allegedly duping families by providing fake brides. The accused, identified as Rajesh and his wife Suman, were taken into custody from the Gwalior district following a complaint by a victim family.
Modus Operandi
According to police officials, the couple would target families looking for suitable matches for their sons. They would promise to arrange a bride and demand money for the wedding preparations. After taking the payment, they would introduce a woman who would later flee or refuse to stay with the groom, leaving the family in financial and emotional distress.
Investigation Details
The racket came to light when a family from a nearby village filed a complaint stating that they had paid over Rs 2 lakh to the accused for arranging a bride. The woman brought for the wedding disappeared within days, and the family suspected foul play. The police launched a probe and arrested the couple after gathering evidence.
During interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement in multiple such cases. They admitted to using the same modus operandi to cheat several families over the past year. The police are now investigating the extent of the racket and looking for other accomplices.
Police Statement
Superintendent of Police, Gwalior, said, "This is a serious crime where the accused exploited the sentiments of families. We have arrested the couple and are working to identify all victims. We urge people to verify credentials before making any payments for marriage arrangements."
Legal Action
The couple has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating, criminal breach of trust, and extortion. They have been remanded to judicial custody, and further investigations are underway to trace other victims and possible associates.
This case highlights the growing menace of marriage rackets in the region, where fraudsters prey on desperate families. Authorities have advised people to be cautious and report any suspicious activities to the police.
