A tragic late-night drive turned fatal for a young MBA student in Pune, resulting in his death and injuring his friend after their car collided with an electricity pole on a major highway.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The incident occurred around 1 am on Sunday, January 3, at Perne Phata on the Pune-Nagar highway. According to the Lonikand police, the car, driven by the victim, veered off and crashed violently into a roadside electricity pole.
The deceased has been identified as Debaganik Das, a 26-year-old resident of Koregaon Park. Senior Inspector Sarjerao Kumbhar of Lonikand police station provided crucial details about the victim's background. Das was pursuing his second-year MBA at a prominent college in Wagholi. Originally hailing from Kolkata, he was living in a rented apartment in the Koregaon Park area. His father is a central government officer currently posted in Bengaluru.
Sequence of Events and Investigation
Preliminary investigations and statements from the injured friend point to a heartbreaking sequence of events. Inspector Kumbhar stated that Das and his friend, Ankita Baral, had decided to go for a long drive late at night after dinner.
It is strongly suspected that Das succumbed to drowsiness while driving, leading to a loss of control over the vehicle. This momentary lapse resulted in the car slamming directly into the pole. The impact of the Pune-Nagar highway crash proved fatal for Das at the spot, while Baral sustained injuries.
Aftermath and Community Impact
The accident has sent shockwaves through the local community and the educational institute where Das was a student. The Lonikand police have registered a case and are conducting a thorough investigation into the exact circumstances.
This incident highlights the severe risks associated with late-night driving and fatigue behind the wheel, especially on high-speed corridors like the Pune-Nagar highway. It serves as a grim reminder for young drivers about the critical importance of alertness and avoiding long drives during hours when the body naturally craves rest.
The police are completing formalities and the injured friend is receiving necessary medical treatment. The body was sent for postmortem as part of the standard procedure.
