Tragic Overbridge Collision Claims Life of Young MBBS Student in Gorakhpur
A promising medical career was cut short in a devastating road accident in Gorakhpur late Wednesday evening. A 22-year-old MBBS student from BRD Medical College lost his life after a speeding SUV violently collided with his scooter on an overbridge, launching him through the air and leaving his body horrifically lodged in the bridge railing for approximately thirty minutes before emergency responders could reach him.
Details of the Fatal Evening Incident
The victim, identified as Akash Pandey, was a third-year medical student and resident of Sant Kabir Nagar. According to police reports, Pandey had spent the evening celebrating Holi at a friend's residence. After enjoying dinner, he embarked on his journey back to his hostel around 9:30 PM.
The catastrophic collision occurred on the Mohaddipur–Kauwabagh Overbridge, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Shahpur police station. Preliminary investigations indicate that a high-speed SUV traveling from the opposite direction crashed directly into Pandey's scooter with tremendous force.
Violent Impact and Delayed Rescue
The impact of the collision was so severe that it propelled the young student approximately fifteen meters through the air. Pandey's body became trapped in the railing of the overbridge, leaving him suspended face down in a precarious position. Distressed passersby immediately alerted authorities, but due to the challenging location and nature of the incident, nearly half an hour elapsed before police could safely extract him from the railing.
Despite being rushed to the district hospital for emergency medical attention, doctors pronounced Akash Pandey dead upon arrival. The violent trauma from the collision proved fatal before medical intervention could be administered.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest
Following the accident, the SUV driver—identified as Golden Sahni, a local property dealer—fled the scene with his vehicle. However, Gorakhpur police launched an immediate manhunt, gathering crucial details from eyewitnesses and issuing wireless alerts to all nearby police stations.
Within approximately sixty minutes of the incident, law enforcement officials successfully traced the vehicle and apprehended the accused driver. Senior Superintendent of Police (City) Abhinav Tyagi confirmed that Sahni has been formally charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
"The accused has been arrested and strict legal action will be taken against him," stated SP Tyagi, emphasizing the seriousness with which authorities are treating this fatal hit-and-run case.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the medical college community and raised urgent questions about road safety on Gorakhpur's overbridges. The death of a young medical professional in training represents not just a personal tragedy for Pandey's family and friends, but a loss to the healthcare system that desperately needs dedicated practitioners.
Local residents have expressed concern about speeding vehicles on the Mohaddipur–Kauwabagh Overbridge, calling for enhanced traffic enforcement and safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The case continues to be investigated as authorities examine all aspects of the collision and the events leading up to the fatal moment.
