MBMC Labourer Faces Pocso Act Charges for Alleged Sexual Harassment of Minor in Mira Bhayander
A 27-year-old labourer employed by the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has been formally booked by authorities on charges of alleged sexual harassment, with additional sections invoked under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The case stems from a complaint filed by a 17-year-old minor, who has accused the labourer of engaging in harassing behaviour on two separate occasions.
Details of the Alleged Incidents and Police Action
The complainant alleges that the first incident took place on December 27 last year within the premises of the MBMC. Subsequently, a second alleged occurrence happened on January 5 outside the municipal corporation's facilities. Following these reports, law enforcement officials registered a formal offence on January 7, initiating a thorough investigation into the matter.
Immediate Administrative Response from MBMC
In response to the serious allegations, senior officials at the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation acted swiftly. "The moment we came to know about the charges, we suspended the employee on January 14," stated a senior MBMC official, highlighting the corporation's commitment to addressing such issues promptly. The minor involved in the case was reportedly employed by a contractor who had been appointed by the MBMC specifically for election-related work.
Contractor Accountability and Legal Proceedings
The MBMC has also taken disciplinary action against the contractor responsible for hiring the minor. Authorities have issued a show-cause notice to the contractor, demanding an explanation for the lapses in supervision and employment practices. Meanwhile, in the legal arena, the accused labourer has secured anticipatory bail, though police confirm that the investigation remains active and ongoing to gather further evidence and statements.
This case underscores the critical importance of safeguarding minors in workplace environments and the rigorous application of laws like the Pocso Act to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and harassment.
