Tragedy Strikes on Nelson Mandela Marg
A young chef's dreams were brutally cut short in the early hours of Sunday when a speeding Mercedes SUV struck and killed him in southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj area. The victim, identified as Rohit, a 23-year-old restaurant employee, was waiting for transportation after completing his shift when the tragic incident occurred.
Family's Sole Breadwinner Lost
Rohit, who hailed from Chamoli in Uttarakhand, was the only earning member of his family and had been supporting his parents and siblings since he was 20 years old. Working as a chef at a restaurant inside Ambience Mall, he earned approximately Rs 15,000 per month, sending most of his earnings home while saving a small portion to fulfill his ambition of opening his own restaurant someday.
Balwant Singh, Rohit's uncle, struggled to hold back tears as he described his nephew as a soft-spoken and humble person who never raised his voice at anyone. "He was the only one earning. Our whole family depended on him," Singh said, adding that the family has lost their only hope for a better future.
The Fateful Night
The accident took place near Ambience Mall on Nelson Mandela Marg when Rohit and two of his colleagues - Kapil and Lalit - were waiting for a vehicle to take them to their rented accommodation in Munirka after finishing their work shift. The Mercedes SUV (model G63) allegedly rammed into the three men, resulting in Rohit's immediate death and critically injuring the other two.
According to police sources, Kapil's condition remains serious, and he continues to receive treatment in the ICU. The other injured person, Lalit, is also undergoing medical care for his injuries.
Police officials confirmed that Rohit's body will be handed over to his grieving family after the completion of the post-mortem examination. The news of his sudden death has particularly devastated his mother, who has lost her son and the family's primary support system.
"Today, without Rohit, we don't know how to handle anything," expressed Balwant Singh. "He was just standing there waiting for a ride home. The SUV driver destroyed all our dreams." The family now faces an uncertain future, having lost not just a beloved son and brother, but their only means of financial stability and their brightest hope for a better tomorrow.
