A 25-year-old migrant worker was brutally hacked to death with a sharp-edged weapon in Mandiyani village of Mullanpur Dakha on Tuesday, according to police. The deceased, identified as Sitaram, was a native of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and had been residing in Khanna.
Police stated that Sitaram worked for a local transport business owned by Sukhwinder Singh. The victim's father, Virender Thakur, informed the authorities that Sitaram had spoken to him two days prior, revealing that he had been receiving life threats from unknown individuals. Thakur claimed that the callers accused his son of eloping with a woman.
Locals discovered the body on Tuesday morning and notified Mandiyani village sarpanch Mandeep Singh, who alerted the police. Residents reported that Sitaram was seen consuming alcohol with some people on Monday night. A sharp-edged weapon recovered from the crime scene is believed to have been used in the murder.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dakha) Karan Singh Sandhu said that police are examining all possible angles, including personal enmity. He added that no complaint regarding elopement had been received against the victim so far, and authorities are verifying the claims made by the victim's father. The DSP noted that several suspects have been taken into custody and are being interrogated. Police also confirmed that Sitaram was married but lived separately from his wife.
