Mizoram Police arrest drug kingpin in Delhi heroin case

Major Breakthrough in Mizoram's War Against Drugs

In a significant development that marks a crucial victory against cross-border narcotics smuggling, Mizoram Police have captured another suspected transnational drug kingpin linked to the state's largest-ever heroin seizure. The arrest represents a major advancement in dismantling sophisticated drug networks operating along the India-Myanmar border.

The Delhi Operation and Key Arrest

According to an official statement released by Mizoram Police on Friday, authorities apprehended Joseph Lianthangpuia, a 42-year-old resident of Chanakya Place, New Delhi, on the night of November 5. The arrest operation was conducted in the national capital as part of the ongoing investigation into case number Saitual Police Station Case No. 63/2025.

The suspect faces serious charges under both the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and the Foreigners Act, 1946. Police officials confirmed that Lianthangpuia and another suspected kingpin will be transported to Mizoram by a specialized Champhai Police team once legal formalities in New Delhi are completed.

Connection to Historic Heroin Seizure

This arrest is directly connected to the record-breaking seizure of 15 kilograms of heroin from a vehicle on August 23, which remains the largest drug haul in Mizoram Police history. The contraband was discovered during a routine check of a vehicle driven by Lalliancheua, a 20-year-old from Falam in Myanmar's Chin state.

The August seizure exposed a highly organized drug trafficking network operating across the porous India-Myanmar border, prompting an intensive investigation that has now yielded significant results with the capture of key operatives.

Pattern of Transnational Drug Operations

This latest arrest follows another major operation earlier this week where police captured Lalchhuanthangi, a 50-year-old suspected drug kingpin from Aizawl who had been residing in New Delhi. Her arrest was connected to a separate case involving the seizure of 7.422 kilograms of heroin near Zokhawthar in July.

The pattern of arrests reveals how transnational drug syndicates are using sophisticated networks with operatives spread across different states while maintaining connections to border areas.

Inter-Agency Cooperation Yields Results

Mizoram Police have expressed their appreciation for the crucial support provided by Delhi Police and the Special Bureau in executing these complex arrests. The cooperation extended to assisting with court procedures and facilitating secure transit through airports, demonstrating effective inter-agency coordination in tackling organized crime.

IGP (Hqrs) and state police chief PRO H Ramthlengliana emphasized that these arrests underscore Mizoram Police's determined efforts to dismantle transnational drug trafficking syndicates and disrupt supply chains operating through the strategic Indo-Myanmar corridor.

The successful operations signal a strengthened approach to combating the flow of narcotics through northeastern states, with authorities demonstrating increased capability in tracking and apprehending key figures in sophisticated cross-border criminal networks.
