Kolkata: High drama unfolded in the city’s Mukundapur area on Monday morning after a mob allegedly stormed and ransacked the ward 109 office of Trinamool councillor Anannya Bandyopadhyay. The public outrage reportedly erupted while Bandyopadhyay was ironically attending a civic event at the KMC headquarters, presided over by CM Suvendu Adhikari.
Cash and Rate Chart Found
The protestors, who breached the heavily furnished premises, allegedly unearthed boxes stuffed with unaccounted for cash, a charge that has not been confirmed by police. Also, the mob at the office claimed that a detailed extortion rate chart specifying mandatory cuts and illegal financial demands to be collected from local realty promoters was found inside the cupboards.
Locals Claim Fleeing Workers
Locals claimed that Trinamool workers reportedly got wind of the public fury and fled the spot with bags of cash, leaving currency notes scattered across the floor. The upscale office, which residents alleged functioned and had been equipped more than a public service centre, reportedly had a dedicated make-up room, a bed, a microwave, a refrigerator, and stacked relief materials.
A local resident pointed to the rate chart and said, “Money was collected from every building in this area. The amounts ranged from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000.”
Political Reactions
BJP MLA Rudranil Ghosh said the new administration was actively establishing the rule of law. “CM Suvendu Adhikari has ensured that the oppressed will no longer suffer under structural intimidation. The high-handedness and institutional extortion by Trinamool netas will face complete public accountability,” Ghosh said.
Bandyopadhyay termed the incident a politically staged conspiracy. “An office naturally houses various utilitarian items. Eid was celebrated not long ago, so the presence of clothes and distribution materials is a standard practice. There is nothing improper or illicit in this,” she countered.
