In a significant operation at Amritsar Central Jail, authorities conducted a surprise inspection and seized multiple mobile phones and SIM cards. The raid was carried out by a special team from the Punjab Police and jail staff, aiming to crack down on illegal communication by inmates.
Details of the Seizure
During the inspection, officials recovered 12 mobile phones, 15 SIM cards, and several chargers from different barracks. The contraband was found hidden in mattresses, toilets, and other concealed spots within the jail premises. According to jail superintendent Harpal Singh, the operation was part of an ongoing effort to maintain security and prevent inmates from coordinating criminal activities outside the prison.
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time such seizures have occurred at the jail. In the past year, similar raids have led to the recovery of dozens of phones and other banned items. Authorities believe that these devices were smuggled in by visitors or thrown over the prison walls. The jail administration has since increased surveillance and implemented stricter visitor checks.
Legal Action
An FIR has been registered against unidentified inmates under the Prisons Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Investigations are underway to identify the owners of the seized phones and trace their call records. The police are also probing possible involvement of jail staff in facilitating the smuggling.
Security Measures
Following the seizure, the jail authorities have decided to install additional jammers and conduct more frequent surprise checks. They have also appealed to the public to report any suspicious activities near the prison. The district administration has assured full support to ensure the jail remains secure and free from illegal activities.
