Mohali Administration Demolishes Unauthorised Constructions in Sukhna Lake Catchment Area
In a significant enforcement action, the district administration of Mohali carried out an extensive anti-encroachment drive in Naya Gaon on Monday. This operation was executed in strict compliance with directions from the high court, specifically targeting unauthorised constructions that have proliferated in the Kansal catchment area of the ecologically vital Sukhna Lake.
Supervised Demolition with Multi-Departmental Coordination
The drive was meticulously supervised by the designated nodal officer, ensuring adherence to legal protocols. Teams from various departments, including the Assistant Municipal Engineer (AME), building inspector, general inspector, and the executive officer, actively participated in the demolition activities. To maintain law and order during the sensitive operation, police personnel were deployed, with the Naya Gaon Station House Officer (SHO) leading the security arrangements.
Focus on Violations in Restricted Ecological Zones
Officials clarified that the enforcement teams concentrated on structures erected in blatant violation of court orders in and around the Patiala Ki Rao region, which encompasses parts of Shivalik Vihar. These areas are situated within the restricted Kansal catchment and floodplain zones, where construction is heavily regulated due to their ecological sensitivity and critical drainage functions linked to Sukhna Lake.
Repeated Warnings Ignored by Violators
Authorities revealed that several notices had been issued to the violators earlier, providing them ample time to comply with the regulations. Despite these warnings, multiple structures were found to be in breach of established land use norms and essential environmental safeguards. Some of these encroachments were particularly concerning as they were obstructing natural drainage channels, posing a threat to the lake's ecosystem.
Phased and Orderly Removal of Encroachments
The demolition and removal work was conducted in a phased and orderly manner to minimise disruption. Officials emphasised that this enforcement action was necessitated by the continued non-compliance of the violators, who had disregarded repeated warnings. The administration has reiterated its firm stance that no unauthorised construction will be permitted in the Kansal catchment area, along Patiala Ki Rao, or in other protected zones.
Strict Action Against Future Violations
The administration has issued a stern warning that any future violations of high court orders will invite strict and immediate action. Residents and property owners in the region have been strongly advised to adhere strictly to sanctioned building plans and comply with all building and environmental regulations. The administration remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the Sukhna Lake catchment and ensuring the enforcement of applicable laws in the broader public interest.
