A tragic incident has unfolded in Mohali's Phase 4, where a young man died by suicide, allegedly due to physical and mental torture inflicted by a local councillor. The deceased, identified as 22-year-old Ravi Kumar, was a resident of the area and worked as a private employee. According to his family, Ravi had been subjected to constant harassment by the councillor, who is also a property dealer, over a monetary dispute.
Details of the Incident
Ravi's father, Ram Lal, filed a complaint with the Phase 4 police station, accusing the councillor of demanding money and threatening his son. The family claims that the councillor and his associates would frequently visit their home, abusing and intimidating Ravi. Unable to bear the pressure, Ravi consumed a poisonous substance on Monday night and was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed on Tuesday.
Police Investigation Underway
The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including abetment to suicide, and have initiated an investigation. The councillor, whose name has been withheld pending formal charges, has denied the allegations, calling them baseless. However, the victim's family demands strict action, alleging that the accused used his political influence to evade accountability.
Local residents have expressed shock over the incident, with many calling for a thorough probe. The police have assured that evidence, including messages and call records, will be examined to establish the sequence of events. No arrests have been made so far, but authorities say they are questioning the accused and collecting statements from witnesses.
This case highlights the growing concerns over mental health and the misuse of power by local leaders. The community is rallying behind the victim's family, demanding justice and stricter laws to prevent such tragedies.
