Mohali Court Gives Life Sentence in 2022 Stabbing Case

A Mohali court has sentenced Ravi Sharma, a resident of Badhmajra, to life imprisonment and imposed a fine in connection with the 2022 stabbing murder of Lal Rattan, an auto driver from Adarsh Colony. The verdict was delivered on July 8, 2026, concluding a case that began with a fatal altercation in January 2022.

Background of the Incident

According to the complaint filed by Sanjay Kumar, the brother of the deceased, the incident occurred on January 24, 2022, at approximately 9:30 pm. Lal Rattan and another individual named Anil were sitting in an auto-rickshaw at the Vegetable Market in Badhmajra when they engaged in an argument over a previous dispute. The argument escalated, and a few hours later, Lal Rattan was allegedly stabbed from behind by an unidentified assailant.

After receiving first aid, Lal Rattan was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Sanjay Kumar, in his complaint, suspected that Anil, along with his associates, had murdered his brother using a sharp-edged weapon.

Police Investigation and Arrests

The Balongi police initiated an investigation and arrested three individuals: Jaspreet Singh, Ravi Sharma, and Satnam Singh, all residents of Badhmajra. During interrogation, the suspects led the police to Ravi Sharma, who was arrested on March 6, 2022. He was produced before the court the following day and remanded to four days of police custody. During this period, Sharma allegedly confessed to the crime.

The police subsequently recovered the sharp-edged weapon allegedly used in the murder, as well as the clothes Ravi Sharma was wearing at the time of the offence. These pieces of evidence were crucial in building the case against him.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

The trial proceeded in the Mohali court, where the prosecution presented evidence, including witness testimonies and forensic reports. The court found Ravi Sharma guilty of murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. On July 8, 2026, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine. The sentence aims to deliver justice to the victim's family and serve as a deterrent against violent crimes.

The court's decision was welcomed by the victim's family, who had been seeking justice for over four years. The case underscores the importance of thorough police investigation and judicial diligence in ensuring accountability for violent offences.
