In a shocking incident that has exposed glaring security vulnerabilities in one of Mohali's most sensitive administrative areas, a man with alleged connections to drug smuggling and a previous high-profile murder case was brutally gunned down on Wednesday afternoon. The brazen attack occurred right outside the gates housing the offices of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), raising immediate and alarming questions about policing preparedness in the region.

The victim, identified as Gurvinder Singh alias Guri from Rurki Kham village, had just concluded a hearing at the district court complex regarding a significant 4-kilogram poppy smuggling case. As he stepped out with his wife around 3:20 PM, what awaited him was nothing short of a meticulously planned assassination.
According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations, two assailants arrived on a motorcycle. One of them approached Gurvinder with such casual demeanor that he appeared to be an acquaintance, even reportedly shaking hands with the victim. In a chilling moment that followed, the assailant suddenly pulled out a weapon and unleashed a barrage of bullets at point-blank range.
The attack was swift and merciless. Gurvinder collapsed instantly as multiple rounds tore through his face, head, neck, and chest, leaving virtually no chance of survival. His wife narrowly escaped death herself, with a bullet grazing her neck in the chaotic onslaught.

When police teams arrived at the crime scene, they discovered 17 empty shells scattered on the ground. Remarkably, not a single stray bullet had struck any nearby vehicles, indicating the shooters' calculated precision. DIG Nanak Singh confirmed the murder and stated that the attack appeared to be connected to either drug-related rivalries or an ongoing gang feud. "His name had surfaced earlier in the Gurlal Brar murder case, so we are not ruling out a gang war angle," the senior officer revealed. Multiple police teams have been deployed to chase leads and examine CCTV footage from surrounding areas.
Victim's Criminal Background and Connections
Gurvinder Singh was no stranger to controversy and criminal allegations. He was one of the accused in the 2020 killing of SOPU president Gurlal Brar, who happened to be the cousin of Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar. The 2020 murder occurred outside City Emporium Mall in Chandigarh, creating significant ripples in the region's criminal underworld.
Furthermore, intelligence inputs had previously linked Gurvinder to international drug trafficker Jodha alias Jodhbir Singh, adding another layer to his alleged criminal associations. This background provides crucial context to understanding the possible motives behind Wednesday's brutal execution.

Ropar range DIG Nanak Singh, along with Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans, confirmed that a prima facie case has been registered under Sections 103(1) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 25 of the Arms Act. The complainant stated that Gurvinder Singh had been receiving threats from Goldy Brar, as he was nominated as an accused in the murder case of Gurlal Brar, Goldy Brar's cousin.

Hours after the murder, the Goldy Brar–Rohit Godara gang posted on social media claiming responsibility for Gurvinder's killing. The post framed the attack as revenge for the murder of Gurlal Brar and included warnings to rivals, invocations of slain gang members, and signals that the ongoing feud was "far from over."
Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans confirmed the existence of the social media post and stated that the claim was being verified by investigating teams.
