Mohali Traffic Police Launches Intensive School Bus Safety Drive

In a significant move to bolster the safety of schoolchildren, the Mohali traffic police executed a comprehensive enforcement drive across the district on Wednesday. This initiative involved rigorous inspections of school buses at multiple locations, aiming to ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and traffic regulations.

Leadership and Supervision of the Drive

The special drive was conducted under the directives of Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans. It was closely supervised by Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Navneet Singh Mahal, with Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Karnail Singh spearheading the field inspections. This coordinated effort is a key component of the district's Safe School Vehicle Policy, designed to create a secure commuting environment for students.

Comprehensive Safety Inspections

During the checks, officials meticulously examined essential safety features in school buses. This included verifying the presence and functionality of CCTV cameras, fire extinguishers, first-aid boxes, and other mandatory equipment. Additionally, documents and compliance with prescribed transport norms were thoroughly reviewed to ensure all vehicles met regulatory standards.

Enforcement Actions and Legal Measures

Buses found lacking required safety arrangements or violating traffic regulations were promptly issued challans. Appropriate legal actions were initiated under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, underscoring the police's commitment to zero tolerance for safety lapses. This enforcement aims to deter violations and promote accountability among school transport operators.

Focus on Driver Compliance and Student Vigilance

Police officials emphasized that the primary objective of the drive is to strengthen student safety by ensuring strict adherence to traffic norms and operational guidelines. Drivers were specifically instructed to avoid exceeding prescribed speed limits and to strictly follow designated routes and traffic rules. In a proactive step, DSP (Traffic) Karnail Singh interacted with schoolchildren during the inspections, advising them to remain vigilant about their own safety.

He urged students to immediately report any instances of their bus driver speeding, driving on the wrong side, or violating traffic rules to their school principal or senior teachers. He highlighted that timely reporting could play a crucial role in preventing untoward incidents and fostering a culture of safety awareness among young commuters.

Commitment to Ongoing Safety Efforts

The traffic police reiterated that such surprise checks will continue across the district to ensure full compliance with safety norms. This ongoing vigilance is part of a broader strategy to create a secure and reliable commuting environment for schoolchildren, reinforcing the importance of regular monitoring and enforcement in safeguarding student welfare.
