Widow's Courageous Stand Against Armed Home Intruder in Mohali
In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, a 54-year-old widow in Derabassi, Mohali, successfully fought off an armed intruder who entered her home under false pretenses, sustaining multiple stab wounds during the intense confrontation.
The Terrifying Afternoon Confrontation
Sushma Sharma, residing on Gulabgarh Road, was home with her daughter-in-law and seven-year-old grandson when the incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon. The assailant arrived at their residence posing as a courier delivery agent, gaining entry when the unsuspecting child opened the gate.
The situation escalated dramatically when the man revealed his true intentions, brandishing a pistol-like weapon in one hand and a knife in the other. "I immediately realized he was not a courier but a robber. Without thinking twice, I caught hold of him," Sharma recounted from her hospital bed.
Fierce Struggle and Multiple Stabbings
What followed was a desperate, close-quarters battle inside the family home. Demonstrating extraordinary presence of mind, Sharma grabbed the attacker's weapon hand with one hand while clutching his neck with the other. She raised loud cries for help while physically dragging him from the entrance toward the drawing room.
Despite being stabbed multiple times during the struggle, Sharma refused to relinquish her grip. "He was stabbing me, but I held him by the throat and kept shouting. I pushed him with all my strength," she told investigators.
Attacker's Flight and Immediate Aftermath
Sharma's relentless resistance and continuous shouting ultimately unnerved the attacker. In a desperate bid to escape, he broke free and fled the residence, leaving behind crucial evidence including his helmet and mobile phone. He sped away on a borrowed scooter, abandoning his criminal plan midway through the confrontation.
The injured widow, soaked in blood from her wounds, was rushed to a nearby hospital where medical professionals administered twenty-four stitches at three different locations on her body. Despite the severity of her injuries, doctors reported she remains in stable condition.
Swift Police Investigation and Arrest
Derabassi police launched an immediate investigation following the attack, with the dropped mobile phone becoming a crucial piece of evidence. Within forty-eight hours, on Thursday, authorities traced and arrested the suspect identified as Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Buddanpur in Sector 16, Panchkula.
Derabassi SP Bikramjit Singh Brar confirmed that the investigative team, led by Inspector Sumit Mor, utilized both technical inputs and human intelligence to track down the accused. Police recovered the sharp-edged weapon used in the attack along with the borrowed Honda Activa scooter.
During police custody, the accused attempted to escape by jumping from a room but failed in his attempt, sustaining injuries to his right arm and feet in the process.
Investigation Findings and Legal Proceedings
Preliminary investigation revealed that the attack stemmed from a monetary dispute, providing the motive behind the violent home invasion. The accused had borrowed both the mobile phone and scooter from an acquaintance specifically to carry out the crime.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Derabassi. The swift resolution of this case demonstrates effective police work combined with crucial evidence left behind by the fleeing attacker.
This incident serves as a powerful testament to human resilience in the face of danger, while also highlighting the importance of community awareness regarding home security and the effectiveness of prompt police response in criminal investigations.
