Momo Craving Costs Family ₹85 Lakh in Jewelry, Two Arrested

Shocking Incident in Uttar Pradesh: Student's Momo Addiction Leads to Massive Jewelry Loss

Momo, the beloved steamed street food savored across India, typically costs a modest 50 to 100 rupees per plate, with prices varying slightly by state. However, a bizarre and alarming incident in Uttar Pradesh has turned this affordable snack into the center of a multi-lakh rupee scandal, highlighting how an innocent craving can spiral into a devastating financial loss.

The Costly Craving: How a Class 7 Student's Love for Momos Resulted in an ₹85 Lakh Loss

According to a PTI report, a class 7 student from the Deoria district developed an intense habit of regularly consuming momos. Initially, he paid for the snacks with cash at a local stall operated by three youths at Dumri Chauraha on the Deoria-Kasya road. However, once his money was exhausted, the situation took a sinister turn. The stall operators allegedly manipulated the minor, coaxing him into bringing jewelry from his home in exchange for the street food.

As the boy's addiction to momos grew, he reportedly continued to pilfer gold ornaments from his family's cupboard, handing them over to the youths. This shocking exchange continued until the family discovered the massive loss, estimated at around ₹85 lakh worth of jewelry.

Discovery and Police Action: FIR Filed and Arrests Made

The incident came to light in Bhagwanpur Tiwari village, under the Rampur Karkhana police station area, when the boy's aunt visited the house on a Sunday and inquired about her jewelry. The family was stunned to find all the ornaments missing. Upon questioning, the minor confessed to giving away the jewelry to the momo stall operators.

In response, the boy's father, who works as a temple priest in Varanasi, filed an FIR at the Rampur Karkhana police station. The complaint was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 305 against the three accused individuals. Police have since arrested two of the suspects—a young man and a woman—and recovered some of the stolen jewelry. One accused remains absconding, and investigations are ongoing to track them down and retrieve the remaining valuables.

Broader Implications: A Cautionary Tale for Families and Communities

This rare and distressing case underscores several critical issues:

  • Child Vulnerability: The incident highlights how minors can be easily influenced and exploited, especially when dealing with addictive behaviors or peer pressure.
  • Parental Vigilance: It serves as a stark reminder for families to monitor their children's activities and safeguard valuable assets.
  • Street Food Safety: While momos remain a popular and generally safe street food, this event points to the potential risks associated with unregulated vendors and their interactions with young customers.

Authorities are urging the public to report any suspicious activities and to educate children about the dangers of interacting with strangers or making unauthorized exchanges. As the police continue their probe, this case has sparked discussions on child protection and consumer awareness in local communities.

With PTI inputs, this story serves as a poignant example of how everyday indulgences can lead to unforeseen consequences, urging greater caution and awareness among all.
