Dehradun Mother's Tireless Quest for Justice Leads to Reopening of Son's Hit-and-Run Case
In a remarkable display of determination, a single mother from Dehradun has successfully compelled police authorities to reopen the hit-and-run case involving her 18-year-old son. Lalita Choudhary, 43, embarked on an 18-month-long personal investigation after the probe was initially closed with a final report stating the unidentified driver could not be traced.
The Tragic Incident and Initial Police Response
Chitij Choudhary, Lalita's son, met a tragic end on February 16, 2024, just a day before he was scheduled to appear for the UP Police entrance exam. A speeding dumping truck struck him from behind in Premnagar and fled the scene, leaving him critically injured. According to Lalita, her son lay unattended on the road for approximately 45 minutes before a passerby called an ambulance. He succumbed to his injuries the following day after doctors were forced to amputate his leg in a desperate attempt to save his life.
"My son was left to die on the road. Nobody came to help him for 45 minutes. He died almost like a stray after being hit by a vehicle," Lalita recounted, highlighting the harrowing circumstances of the incident.
Lalita's Solo Investigation and Challenges
After performing the last rites, Lalita managed to get an FIR registered on February 19 against an unidentified accused under IPC sections 279 and 304A. However, her repeated visits to the police station yielded little progress, with officers allegedly telling her they did not have a "magic wand" to solve the case. This response spurred her into action, realizing she would have to fight for justice on her own.
Beginning her search for evidence from February 27, Lalita focused on obtaining CCTV footage to identify the vehicle involved. She secured footage of the incident after 11 days, but when she presented it to the police, officers blamed her for circulating it widely and complicating the investigation. Undeterred, she continued tracking the truck and its driver independently, even as the case appeared to stall officially.
Setback and Breakthrough
The investigation faced a significant setback in September 2025 when Lalita learned that the investigating officer had filed a final report, concluding that the unidentified accused could not be found. Heartbroken but resolute, she intensified her efforts and, after 18 months of relentless pursuit, successfully identified the truck, its owner, and the driver.
The turning point came when Lalita met farmer leader Rakesh Tikait during a demonstration in Dehradun on Friday, in the presence of Dehradun SSP Pramendra Dobal and other senior police officers. Tikait urged authorities to act, leading to Lalita being asked to present her gathered evidence at the SSP's office on Saturday.
Police Response and Re-investigation Order
Taking note of the compelling material provided by Lalita, SSP Dobal ordered a re-investigation into the case. Dehradun (City) SP Pramod Kumar stated, "We have taken note of the evidence gathered by Lalita. A thorough investigation will be carried out and strict action will be taken against the accused."
Despite attempts to contact the investigating officer for a response on allegations of inaction, no reply was available at the time of reporting.
Lalita Choudhary's story is a powerful testament to a mother's unwavering love and determination in the face of bureaucratic hurdles, setting a precedent for citizen-led justice in hit-and-run cases.
