Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has declared that the state government will request a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of Twisha Sharma. The announcement came during a meeting with the bereaved family, where Yadav assured them of all possible assistance from the state authorities.
Chief Minister Meets Family
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited the residence of Twisha Sharma's family in Bhopal. During the hour-long meeting, he listened to their concerns and pledged a thorough investigation into the mysterious death. The family had been demanding a CBI inquiry, alleging a cover-up by local police.
Assurances of Support
Yadav stated, "The state government stands with the family in this hour of grief. We will ensure that justice is served. A CBI probe will bring out the truth." He also announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family and promised employment opportunities for one family member.
Twisha Sharma, a 22-year-old nursing student, was found dead under suspicious circumstances in her hostel room earlier this month. Initial police reports suggested suicide, but the family claimed she was murdered. The case sparked protests in Bhopal, with activists demanding a fair investigation.
Political Reactions
Opposition parties have welcomed the decision, with Congress leaders calling it a "victory for the people's movement." However, they criticized the delay in initiating the probe. The state government has faced pressure from various quarters to ensure a transparent investigation.
The CBI will take over the case from the local police, who have been accused of mishandling evidence. The agency is expected to file a fresh First Information Report (FIR) and conduct a detailed forensic examination.
Twisha's father, Ramesh Sharma, expressed relief after the meeting. "We are grateful to the Chief Minister for his assurance. We hope the CBI will uncover the truth and punish the guilty," he said.
The case has drawn attention to the safety of women in hostels and educational institutions. Activists have called for stricter safety measures and faster legal processes in such cases.
