Security Forces Intensify Multi-District Anti-Terror Operations Across Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh
A comprehensive joint security operation was launched by multiple security agencies on Thursday in Billawar, located in Jammu & Kashmir's Kathua district. This action came in direct response to credible reports from local residents who observed two suspicious individuals carrying backpacks in the forested areas near Khumbla village.
Widespread Security Operations Across Multiple Districts
Simultaneously, several coordinated anti-terror operations continue to be actively conducted in the challenging upper reaches of Kishtwar, Doda, Udhampur, and other districts. These operations aim to locate and neutralize terrorists who remain at large. Operation Trashi-I in Kishtwar has now entered its twelfth consecutive day, demonstrating the sustained commitment of security forces.
In light of these developments, Chamba district in neighboring Himachal Pradesh has been placed on high alert, according to Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Saklani. Security agencies have significantly enhanced surveillance measures along the 208-kilometer inter-state boundary that Chamba shares with Jammu & Kashmir. This strategic district is considered one of Himachal Pradesh's most sensitive border regions.
Persistent Search Efforts Despite Harsh Conditions
Despite facing severe weather conditions including heavy snowfall, security forces have maintained relentless search operations. A joint team comprising the Indian Army, paramilitary forces, local police, and Special Operations Groups (SOG) continues to comb through the difficult mountainous terrain across various Jammu & Kashmir districts. Many of these areas are interconnected through dense forest cover, complicating the pursuit of fleeing terrorists believed to be associated with the Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit.
Senior officers from multiple security agencies are closely monitoring all ongoing operations to ensure coordinated efforts and effective response strategies.
Operation Trashi-I: Timeline of Engagements
The sustained Operation Trashi-I has witnessed several significant encounters:
- January 18: The first exchange of fire occurred in Sonnar village near Mandral-Singhpora, resulting in injuries to eight security personnel. Tragically, one of these personnel later succumbed to their injuries.
- January 22: Another intense gunfight erupted with terrorists who had taken shelter in Singhpora.
- January 24: A subsequent firefight led to the elimination of a Pakistani terrorist affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad.
Previous Discoveries and Terrorist Evasion
Earlier, on January 16, security forces successfully dismantled three terrorist hideouts in Kathua district. The recoveries from these sites were substantial and revealing:
- Food supplies and utensils
- Cooking gas cylinders
- Empty M4 ammunition cartridges
- Various logistical materials
These supplies indicated preparation for extended operations, sufficient to sustain terrorists for several months. However, during subsequent encounters in Kamad Nallah, Kalaban, and Dhanu Parole areas, the fleeing terrorists managed to evade capture by security forces.
Strategic Implications and Security Concerns
A security source in Himachal Pradesh highlighted the broader implications of these discoveries, stating, "This evidence points toward long-term operational planning by terrorist elements. There remains a persistent risk of infiltration attempts into Chamba district, particularly if terrorists face increased pressure from security operations in neighboring Kishtwar."
The coordinated efforts across state boundaries underscore the comprehensive approach being taken to address security threats in the region, with particular attention to preventing any potential spillover effects into Himachal Pradesh.
