Mumbai Police Uncover Financial Links in Fatal Drug Overdose Case at Music Concert

Police investigations into the suspected drug overdose incident at a music show in Goregaon (East), Mumbai, which resulted in the tragic deaths of two MBA students, have revealed critical financial connections. The ecstasy pills consumed at the event were sourced from a major drug supplier who remains at large, and three of the arrested individuals had monetary dealings with his wife, according to authorities.

Details of the Incident and Arrests

So far, ten people have been apprehended in connection with this case. The victims, a 28-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman, were part of a group of 25 MBA students attending a music concert at an exhibition ground on April 11. They ingested ecstasy pills and succumbed a day later. Additionally, a 25-year-old woman was hospitalized after falling ill from consuming the same substance.

Investigators have identified Ayush Sahitya as the prime accused, noting he was in direct contact with the fugitive drug supplier. Police are currently interrogating Sahitya to gather leads on the supplier's whereabouts. Further scrutiny has uncovered that Sahitya, along with co-accused Shubh Agarwal and Vineet Gerelani, transferred funds to the supplier's wife's bank account, allegedly from drug sales. Notably, even during the concert, Gerelani sent money to Sahitya's sister's account, highlighting the ongoing financial activity.

Focus on Financial Transactions and Security Lapses

The investigation is now heavily centered on tracing the money trail. Police have discovered a significant volume of financial transactions among Sahitya, Gerelani, Agarwal, and another co-accused, Anand Patel, occurring both ten days before the concert and after the event. Authorities are meticulously examining bank statements from all accused parties to construct a robust legal case.

In a related development, police arrested Pradeep Gupta, a security guard at the concert venue, on Sunday. He is accused of allowing Sahitya and Gerelani entry without tickets, reportedly in exchange for a bribe. Investigators are questioning Gupta to determine if he facilitated access for other individuals carrying drugs as well.

"The exhibition ground had hired external vendors to handle security and other arrangements. We will summon and question each vendor as it appears from the investigation so far that drugs were supplied at the event in considerable quantity," stated an investigator involved in the case.

Legal Proceedings and Custody Extensions

On Monday, Sahitya, Gerelani, Agarwal, and Patel were presented before a magistrate court in Borivli. Gerelani's lawyer, Arjun Jeswani, argued that his client had already been remanded in police custody three times and requested judicial custody. Similarly, lawyers for Patel and Agarwal, Azad Gupta and Surendra Landge, contended that analyzing bank documents did not necessitate their clients' physical presence in police custody. Despite these pleas, the magistrate court extended the police custody of all four accused until April 23.

This case underscores the severe consequences of drug abuse and the intricate networks involved in illicit drug distribution. As the probe continues, authorities aim to dismantle the supply chain and hold all responsible parties accountable for their roles in this tragic event.
