Mumbai: FIR Filed Over Canine Sexual Assault by Maintenance Staff

Mumbai Police Book Maintenance Staff Under Animal Cruelty Act After Disturbing Allegations

In a shocking incident that has sent ripples through Mumbai, the fiancée of film actor Pulkit Makol has lodged a formal police complaint alleging that a maintenance staff member hired for cleaning and dog care duties sexually assaulted two female canines in their residential flat located in Andheri (West). The Amboli police have taken swift action by registering a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Complainant Details and Suspect Identification

The case was officially filed by Tanvi Khanna, who is engaged to actor Pulkit Makol, against the maintenance staff member identified as Ranjan Shah. According to the First Information Report (FIR), Shah was specifically employed to handle cleaning tasks and provide care for the dogs residing in the flat. Khanna explained her frequent absences from the Mumbai residence, stating, "Shah was hired to clean and take care of the dog in my flat. I always stay in Delhi for work and occasionally in Mumbai. Also, Makol is often in Mumbai or outside Mumbai for shooting."

Discovery of the Alleged Crime Through CCTV Footage

The disturbing sequence of events began to unfold when Khanna was in Delhi attending to her professional commitments. She remotely accessed the CCTV cameras installed in the Mumbai flat via her mobile device to check on the well-being of her dogs. During this routine check, she noticed suspicious activity captured on camera.

Khanna recounted in the FIR: "I was in Delhi for work for the last seven days. On Tuesday at 2 am, while I was in Delhi, I was talking to Makol. After that, I turned on the CCTV cameras installed in the flat on my mobile to check if the dogs were sleeping. I saw our servant, Shah, turning the camera around 12 am. At that time, I suspected that Shah was doing something inappropriate. When I observed my dogs in the CCTV cameras, I noticed they were behaving differently than usual."

Immediate Response and Confrontation

Alarmed by what she witnessed, Khanna immediately contacted her neighbor, Saurabh Bedi, requesting him to visit the flat and investigate the situation. Bedi, accompanied by his friend Mahak, promptly went to the residence. Shortly thereafter, actor Pulkit Makol also arrived at the scene to assist.

Upon confronting the maintenance staff member, Shah initially provided evasive responses, claiming he was merely playing with the dogs. However, under persistent questioning and pressure from those present, he eventually confessed to the alleged acts. A police officer from the Amboli police station detailed the confession, stating, "But when everyone threatened and questioned him, he admitted that he had touched the private part of the small white dog among the two dogs with his finger and had sexually assaulted the large golden dog."

Police Intervention and Legal Action

Following the confrontation and confession, the individuals at the flat contacted the police control room by dialing 100 for emergency assistance. Law enforcement officials arrived at the location and took suspect Ranjan Shah into custody, transporting him to the police station for further interrogation and procedural formalities.

The police have officially served notice to Shah, who now faces charges under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. This comprehensive legislation defines and explicitly prohibits various forms of animal cruelty, including acts of beating, torturing, starving, abandoning, or overloading animals. Penalties under this act can include monetary fines for first-time offences, with subsequent violations potentially leading to both fines and imprisonment for up to three months.

Broader Implications and Community Reaction

This incident has highlighted critical issues surrounding animal welfare and the responsibilities of those entrusted with pet care. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and proper background checks when hiring individuals for domestic duties, especially those involving vulnerable animals. Animal rights activists and local residents have expressed deep concern over the allegations, calling for stringent enforcement of animal protection laws to prevent such occurrences in the future.
