Mumbai Police Crack Down on LPG Black Marketing in Govandi
In a significant enforcement action, the Deonar police have arrested a man in the Govandi area of Mumbai for allegedly engaging in the illegal sale of commercial LPG cylinders at inflated prices. The arrest followed a coordinated operation based on a tipoff received by civil supplies department officials, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb black-marketing activities in the city.
Seizure of Illegally Stored Cylinders
Acting on the intelligence, civil supplies department officials conducted a raid on Saturday, leading to the seizure of several illegally stored commercial gas cylinders. The operation targeted a specific location where the cylinders were suspected to be hoarded for unauthorized distribution.
During the inspection, officials encountered a parked tempo with its doors securely locked, raising suspicions. After repeated attempts to contact the driver proved unsuccessful, the team sought immediate assistance from the Deonar police to gain access to the vehicle.
Discovery and Arrest
With police help, the doors of the tempo were opened, revealing a filled 21kg commercial LPG cylinder and two empty ones inside. This discovery prompted further investigation into the source and purpose of the cylinders.
The owner of the tempo, identified as Mohammad Farooq Sheikh, was subsequently questioned by authorities. During interrogation, Sheikh confessed to his involvement in a black-marketing scheme. He admitted to purchasing cylinders from legitimate gas agencies and then reselling them at inflated rates, earning an illegal profit of approximately Rs 200 per cylinder.
