Mumbai Police Intensify Patrols Amid LPG Shortage Chaos
In response to escalating law-and-order concerns, Mumbai police have significantly stepped up deployment across various parts of the city. This move comes after widespread chaos and overcrowding at several LPG outlets, which have triggered public unrest and safety issues. The situation has been exacerbated by delays in cylinder deliveries, leading to heightened tensions among residents.
Serious Incident in Bhandup Highlights Safety Risks
A particularly alarming incident was reported from the Bhandup area, where a delivery worker was assaulted by agitated residents demanding immediate supply of LPG cylinders. According to a dealer from Bhandup West, the delivery vehicle was forcibly stopped by an angry crowd. The keys were taken away, and the delivery man was slapped and physically manhandled by individuals insisting that their cylinders be delivered ahead of schedule.
The dealer explained that staff are strictly following booking schedules and area-wise delivery plans, but public anger over delays has made operations increasingly difficult and unsafe. In one locality, only 30 cylinders had been assigned for delivery, yet nearly 60 consumers were simultaneously demanding supply, creating a volatile environment.
Escalating Violence and Theft at Outlets
In the ensuing rush, some people allegedly attempted to grab cylinders directly from the delivery vehicles, while empty cylinders were also reported stolen by those waiting in queues for replacements. This has further complicated the distribution process and raised concerns about property safety.
The assaulted delivery worker, described by the dealer as a simple and polite individual, has now refused to return to cylinder delivery duty. This decision worsens the existing staff shortage at the outlet, hampering efforts to normalize supply chains.
Dealers Voice Concerns Over Unsafe Conditions
A member of the LPG dealers' association highlighted that despite increased police presence at some locations, dealers are finding it increasingly unsafe to carry out deliveries. The association has called for enhanced security measures to protect workers and ensure smooth operations amidst the ongoing crisis.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, urging the public to remain patient and follow official protocols to avoid further incidents. The police have assured that strict action will be taken against anyone involved in violence or theft related to the LPG shortages.
