Mumbai Railway Land Eviction Sparks Violence, 13 Injured

Mumbai witnessed one of its largest anti-encroachment operations as Western Railway launched a demolition drive at Garib Nagar near Bandra station to reclaim railway land valued at nearly Rs 600 crore. Authorities reported that around 500 hutments had been erected dangerously close to railway tracks, overhead electric lines, and other critical infrastructure. The demolition follows years of legal battles, with the Bombay High Court permitting the clearance operation earlier this year.

Heavy Police Deployment and Traffic Chaos

Heavy police deployment and road barricading around Bandra station led to severe traffic congestion and commuter disruptions. Tensions escalated on the second day when officials attempted to remove an allegedly illegal prayer structure near the Bandra East skywalk, triggering protests and violence. Police stated that protesters hurled stones and other objects at officials, prompting a lathicharge. At least seven policemen and six protesters were injured, while 10 people were detained. An FIR has been registered over the clashes.

Reclaimed Land for Railway Expansion

Western Railway said the reclaimed land is crucial for future railway expansion and infrastructure upgrades around Bandra station. However, the eviction drive has sparked anger and uncertainty among hundreds of affected families, especially with Eid approaching. The operation is part of a broader effort to clear encroachments on railway property, which has been a contentious issue in Mumbai for decades.

The Bombay High Court had earlier permitted the clearance, emphasizing the need to ensure safety and operational efficiency. Despite legal backing, the eviction has drawn criticism from local activists and political leaders, who argue that alternative rehabilitation measures should have been provided before demolition. The situation remains tense as authorities continue the clearance operation under heavy security.
