Mumbai College Student Suffers Hair-Cutting Assault and Social Media Threats

A shocking incident in Mumbai's Versova area has left a 20-year-old college student traumatized after three of her college friends, including a female acquaintance, allegedly assaulted her by cutting her hair and threatening to post a video of the act on social media. The Versova police have registered a case against the three students, aged 20 and 21, following the victim's complaint, with the attack occurring in the early hours of Wednesday.

Details of the Assault and Police Investigation

According to police reports, the incident took place at approximately 12:30 am when the victim was at home with her domestic maid, while her parents were away attending a family function. The three accused students forcibly pulled the victim out of her flat, holding her by the hair, and proceeded to cut her hair while recording the entire episode on their mobile phones. When the victim screamed for help, the main suspect threatened her, warning that they would malign her image by uploading the video to social media platforms.

In her official complaint, the victim revealed that she had met the 21-year-old main suspect and her boyfriend through a mutual friend. On March 7, the suspect had visited the victim's home in Andheri (west) and checked her mobile phone, leaving without finding anything suspicious. At the time, the victim was unaware of the reason behind this intrusion. The motive became clear during the assault, as police stated that the main suspect believed the victim was having an affair with her boyfriend, leading to the violent retaliation.

Police Action and Ongoing Probe

The Versova police have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter, seeking CCTV footage from the victim's building to identify the three students and trace their route after the incident. A police officer involved in the case emphasized that the probe is focused on understanding the full context of the assault and ensuring appropriate legal action is taken against the perpetrators. The officer noted, "The trio pulled the victim out of her flat and even threatened her when she screamed for help. The motive behind the act was found to be the suspect's suspicion that the victim was involved with her boyfriend."

This case highlights growing concerns about bullying and violence among young adults, particularly in educational settings, and the misuse of social media to intimidate victims. Authorities are urging the public to report such incidents promptly to prevent escalation and protect individuals from similar traumatic experiences.
