Man Opens Fire in Mumbra, Killing One and Injuring Two Over Alleged Harassment
In a shocking incident in Mumbra, Thane, one person was killed and two others sustained injuries on Thursday after a 51-year-old man allegedly opened fire on them. The accused, identified as Jayen Shivanandan Nair, was arrested by the Mumbra police following the violent altercation.
Dispute Over Banana Tree Escalates into Deadly Confrontation
The firing occurred at approximately 11:30 am near the Sumatibai Chavan Hindi Primary School in the Kailas Nagar area of Mumbra, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mumbra police station. According to police reports, the incident stemmed from a minor dispute regarding the cutting of a banana tree within the school premises.
A woman who works as a caretaker at the school, whom the accused considers his sister, was involved in a heated argument with three individuals over this issue. During the confrontation, the woman allegedly informed Nair that she was being harassed by the men, as stated by Anil Shinde, the senior inspector of Mumbra police station.
Accused Acts in Rage, Victims Rushed to Hospital
In a fit of rage upon hearing about the alleged harassment, Nair reportedly opened fire at the three individuals. The victims were immediately rushed to Kalsekar Hospital for medical treatment. Tragically, one of them, identified as Akbar Abdul Sheikh, was declared dead during treatment. The two other injured persons are currently in stable condition, according to police officials.
Background of the Accused and Weapon Recovery
Police investigations revealed that Nair shares a close bond with the woman's family. When he was just nine years old, he lost his parents in Kolkata. During that difficult period, the mother of the woman took him in and raised him, fostering a deep sense of protectiveness towards the family.
Authorities have recovered the weapon used in the crime, which is described as a country-made firearm. During questioning, Nair claimed that he had found the firearm during a trip near a secluded spot along the Gujarat border and had kept it in his possession.
Rising Concerns Over Gun Violence in Thane Region
This incident has sparked fresh concerns over gun-related violence in Mumbra, as it comes just days after another firing case involving Nadeem Khan alias Baba Khan. In that incident, the accused allegedly fired at police officers while attempting to evade arrest.
Additionally, a separate case of firing was reported last week in Thane's Pachpakhadi area. With at least three firing incidents occurring in Thane within a single month, serious questions are being raised about law and order, policing effectiveness, and overall public safety in the region.
Local residents and authorities are calling for increased vigilance and stricter measures to curb such violent incidents and ensure community security.
