In a dramatic late-night operation, the Ghazipur police successfully apprehended a wanted murder suspect following an exchange of gunfire in the Gahmar police station area of Varanasi. The incident, which unfolded on Friday night, resulted in the arrest of the accused and the recovery of an illegal firearm.
Police Patrol Leads to Encounter
Acting on the ongoing campaign against crime, a police team led by Gahmar Station Officer Pramod Kumar Singh was conducting a routine night patrol. During their surveillance, they received crucial intelligence indicating that the prime suspect in a local murder case was present within the jurisdiction and was allegedly planning to escape.
Swiftly acting on this tip-off, the team proceeded towards Mathiya ghat. As they approached the location, a man was spotted coming from the opposite direction. Upon noticing the police personnel, the individual, later identified as Om Singh, a resident of Gahmar Patti Kheluray village, reportedly opened fire at the officers in a bid to evade capture.
Exchange of Fire and Arrest
The police team, facing imminent threat, retaliated in self-defence. In the ensuing shootout, Om Singh sustained a bullet injury to his left leg. The officers immediately secured the scene and provided medical assistance. The injured accused was promptly transported to the district CHC Bhadaura in Ghazipur for necessary treatment.
Following the encounter, the police conducted a search and made a significant seizure. From Om Singh's possession, they confiscated a country-made pistol of .315 bore and one empty cartridge, providing material evidence in the case.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
The Ghazipur police have initiated formal legal action in connection with the incident. A case has been registered to document the events of the police encounter, ensuring that due process is followed. The arrest marks a crucial breakthrough in the Gahmar murder case, for which Om Singh was a wanted accused.
This operation underscores the continued efforts of the Uttar Pradesh police to clamp down on criminal elements and maintain law and order, particularly under special drives targeting wanted offenders.
