Murder Attempt Accused Arrested After Gunfight in Varanasi

A joint team of Dokati police station and the Special Operations Group (SOG) arrested a murder attempt accused, Dheeraj Singh (26), following an exchange of fire late on Friday. Police had placed a cash reward of Rs 25,000 on his head.

Details of the Incident

Ballia ASP (southern) Sanjay Verma on Saturday stated that Dokati police personnel were conducting night patrols late on Friday night when they received intelligence regarding the movement of the criminal. Acting on this information, the police cordoned off the Dokati Dhala area and attempted to intercept Dheeraj. Finding himself surrounded by law enforcement, Dheeraj opened fire on the police team in an effort to escape. However, he sustained a bullet injury during retaliatory firing by the police and was subsequently apprehended.

Recovery and Confession

Following his arrest, the police rushed Dheeraj to a hospital for medical treatment. A country-made pistol and cartridges were recovered from his possession. During interrogation, he confessed to having attempted to kill Sujit Kumar Singh of the Lakshman Chhapra area using a sharp weapon on March 22.
