A murder convict serving a life sentence escaped from an open prisoner camp under Chittorgarh District Prison on Friday morning, prompting a search operation by the police. The jail administration lodged a complaint at Chittorgarh’s Kotwali police station after the prisoner was found missing during a routine headcount.
Incident Details
According to Kotwali Station House Officer (SHO) Tulsiram Prajapat, jail guard Vedram Chaudhary reported that Lalit Meena, also known as Lalshankar or Lala, a resident of Udaipur district, was lodged in the open jail. During the 6 AM roll call, prison staff discovered that one inmate was missing. A recount was conducted, but the prisoner could not be traced, following which authorities informed the police.
Police Response
Police registered a case and began searching for the absconding prisoner. Efforts are underway to track down the convict, and multiple teams have been deployed to possible hideouts.
Background of the Convict
Jail officials confirmed that Lalit Meena was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 on December 18, 2019, for a murder conviction. The open prison camp is designed for low-risk inmates, but this incident has raised security concerns.
The police are investigating the circumstances of the escape and whether any negligence by jail staff contributed to the incident. Further updates are expected as the search progresses.
