Mysuru ASP Calls for Aggressive Action Against Drug Abuse
In a decisive move to tackle the growing threat of substance abuse, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) C Mallik has issued a strong directive to officials, emphasizing the urgent need to educate youth about the severe consequences of drug addiction. Speaking at the district-level Narco Coordination Committee meeting held at the zilla panchayat auditorium in Mysuru on Wednesday, Mallik highlighted that drug addiction is not only harmful but also a criminal offense.
Strict Enforcement Measures Mandated
ASP Mallik instructed officials to implement rigorous enforcement protocols. He mandated that any individual suspected of being under the influence of narcotics must undergo immediate testing. Furthermore, he called for the excise department to conduct regular and surprise raids, noting that this step is crucial as substances like ganja can be cultivated in agricultural fields and even residential backyards, making detection challenging.
"We must be proactive in our approach to curb this menace," Mallik stated, underscoring the importance of these measures in preventing drug proliferation.
Public Health and Legal Actions
In addition to targeting drug use, Mallik urged officials to impose fines on those found smoking beedis or cigarettes in public places, citing the harm caused to others through secondhand smoke. This move aims to promote public health and discourage irresponsible behavior.
On a positive note, Mallik acknowledged that many individuals have successfully undergone de-addiction treatment at rehabilitation centers, demonstrating that recovery is possible with proper support. However, he also revealed alarming statistics: in the past month alone, cases were registered against 80 people in 71 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, highlighting the scale of the issue.
Collaborative Efforts and Attendance
The meeting saw the presence of key officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sundar Raj and representatives from various departments, indicating a coordinated effort to address drug-related challenges. This collaborative approach is expected to enhance the effectiveness of awareness campaigns and enforcement actions across the district.
