Mysuru Court Delivers Life Sentence in Brutal Double Murder Case
The principal district and sessions court in Mysuru has delivered a significant verdict, sentencing a 55-year-old man to life imprisonment for the horrific double murder of his elder brother and sister-in-law. The convict, identified as Hanumantha, a resident of T Narasipura taluk in Mysuru district, was found guilty of the premeditated killings that occurred in August 2023.
Background of the Land Dispute
According to the prosecution, the tragic incident stemmed from a long-standing land dispute between the two brothers. Hanumantha was cultivating land in a grazing area near Jenugudde. However, his elder brother, Shivalingegowda, allegedly prevented him from accessing this land and had been cultivating it himself for the past two to three years. Reports indicate that Shivalingegowda used intimidation tactics to maintain control over the property, which led to escalating hostility and resentment between the siblings.
The Fatal Attack in August 2023
In a violent turn of events in August 2023, Hanumantha learned that Shivalingegowda and his wife, Bharathi, were working in the disputed field. Armed with an axe, Hanumantha went to the spot and launched a brutal attack on his brother. When Bharathi attempted to intervene and rescue her husband, she too was assaulted with the axe. Both Shivalingegowda and Bharathi sustained severe injuries and died on the spot, marking a tragic end to the familial conflict.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The investigation into this heinous crime was conducted by Manoj Kumar, who was then the police inspector of the Bannur police station. Following a thorough probe, a chargesheet was filed, leading to the trial. After hearing the case, Judge Usharani of the principal district and sessions court convicted Hanumantha of the double murder. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh, as confirmed in a release from public prosecutor MN Ranjana Rao.
This verdict underscores the judiciary's commitment to delivering justice in cases of violent crimes, particularly those arising from personal disputes. The life sentence serves as a stern reminder of the severe consequences of taking the law into one's own hands, even in the face of provocation or conflict.
