Mysuru Police Intensify Crackdown on Drunk and Reckless Driving with License Suspension Recommendations
In a significant move to enhance road safety, Mysuru city police have ramped up their campaign against drunken and reckless driving by actively recommending the suspension of driving licenses for offenders. Transport authorities have confirmed that suspensions ranging from one to six months are becoming a standard procedure for serious traffic violations.
Recent Enforcement Drive Targets 152 Motorists
Last week, police formally sought the suspension of licenses for 152 motorists who were booked during a special enforcement drive conducted from March 1 to 7. Of these, 111 individuals were cited for speeding offenses, while 41 were apprehended for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Commissioner of Police Seema Latkar emphasized that this initiative is a core component of broader efforts to improve road safety and instill greater traffic discipline throughout the city. She has issued directives to traffic police units to increase the frequency and rigor of recommendations against errant drivers, particularly repeat offenders. Police officials have affirmed that such targeted enforcement drives will continue as a sustained strategy.
Clear Criteria for License Suspension Proceedings
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M Shivashankar outlined the specific violations that will trigger suspension proceedings. Motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol, exceeding speed limits, or operating vehicles in a manner that jeopardizes public safety will face immediate action. Furthermore, cases involving fatal accidents linked to negligent or dangerous driving will also be scrutinized for potential license suspension.
Shivashankar stated that the primary objective of this stringent action is to reduce traffic violations and enhance overall compliance with road rules across Mysuru, thereby creating safer streets for all residents and visitors.
Administrative Process and Past Enforcement Data
Regional Transport Officer (East) SN Madhura detailed the administrative process following police recommendations. Once police submit comprehensive violation details, formal notices will be issued to the implicated motorists. These individuals will then have an opportunity to present their response before a final decision on suspension is made by the transport authorities. The duration of any suspension will be determined based on the severity and circumstances of the offense.
Madhura also provided enforcement data, revealing that until the end of February, the East Regional Transport Office had already suspended 34 driving licenses and initiated proceedings in 36 additional cases. Among these, 28 cases involved various other traffic offenses, while eight were specifically related to drunken driving incidents.

Police officials have underscored that consistent and sustained enforcement is absolutely essential to bring about lasting discipline on Mysuru's roads. They issued a stern warning that serious or repeated traffic violations will not only attract substantial fines but will also lead to the suspension of driving privileges, reflecting a zero-tolerance approach toward endangerment of public safety.
