Mysuru Police Harness CEIR Portal to Recover Lost Mobile Phones
In a quiet yet impactful initiative, Mysuru city police are assisting numerous mobile phone users in retrieving their lost devices. This effort is powered by the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, which has become a vital support system for the public, enabling swift tracing and recovery of missing phones.
Recent Success Stories in Mysuru
Recent cases underscore the portal's utility. Metagalli police successfully helped two women recover their lost mobile phones by using the CEIR portal to trace the devices and return them to their rightful owners. Similarly, Krishnaraja police utilized the portal to aid a senior citizen in retrieving a misplaced phone.
One notable beneficiary, Kiran, expressed relief after getting his smartphone back within a month. He lost the phone while traveling on a bus, having kept it in his shirt pocket, only to find it missing after alighting. Kiran filed a complaint with Devaraja police on February 19, and nearly a month later, the device was restored to him.
Kiran highlighted the immediate inconvenience and anxiety caused by the loss, as he had to arrange an alternate device and obtain a new SIM card. Beyond the financial impact, he was particularly concerned about the potential misuse of his personal data, including contacts.
How the CEIR Portal Works
Police explained that when a mobile phone is lost, users should immediately log on to the CEIR portal to block the handset and track its usage through the unique IMEI number. Once registered, the system can identify the phone's location and generate details about the person or SIM card currently in use. This data proves extremely valuable for law enforcement agencies during investigations.
Officials noted that the CEIR portal has proven to be a practical and efficient tool for recovering smartphones. The available data helps police track the device's movement and identify those in possession. In Kiran's case, the individual who lifted the phone sold it to another person for a small sum. As soon as the new user inserted a SIM card, the number was detected, allowing police to intervene and ensure the phone's return.
Broader Impact and Police Endorsement
The CEIR portal has significantly reduced the difficulties faced by mobile users after losing their devices. It also serves a broader public purpose by discouraging the illegal sale and purchase of stolen mobile phones. Commissioner of Police Seema Latkar emphasized that officers at the station level are effectively using the CEIR portal, which has become an invaluable resource for tracing lost phones and aiding many users.
This initiative not only restores property but also alleviates the stress and potential security risks associated with lost mobile devices, showcasing how technology can enhance public safety and support.
