Nagpur: 6 held for murder after Christmas party brawl

Nagpur police have arrested six individuals in connection with a fatal assault that followed a Christmas party, leading to one death and another man fighting for his life in hospital. The violent incident occurred in the early hours of Friday outside the Dabo Club on Wardha Road near Pride Square.

Dispute Over Alleged Misconduct Sparks Street Violence

The confrontation reportedly began inside the popular Dabo Club pub over an alleged misconduct with a woman. The argument spilled onto the street around 4 am, where it turned brutally violent. A group, armed with sharp weapons, iron rods, and bricks, launched a savage attack on two friends.

Pranay Rannaware, a 28-year-old resident of Mahal area, sustained critical injuries in the assault. He was rushed to Orange City Hospital but later succumbed to his wounds. His friend, Gaurav Karda, 34, from Kalamna, was also severely beaten and remains admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Key Accused Has Political, Police Links

One of the primary accused in the case has drawn significant attention due to his family background. Soumya Deshmukh, 24, from Zingabai Takli, is the son of a leading political party leader. His father also claims to be a human rights activist. Furthermore, Deshmukh is a relative of two serving police personnel, adding a complex layer to the investigation.

The Sonegaon police station, under the supervision of Inspector Nitin Magar, promptly registered a murder case. By Friday, December 27, authorities had tracked down and arrested all six suspects involved in the crime.

Police Crackdown and Preventive Measures

The arrested accused were presented in court, which remanded them to police custody until January 3, 2026. The complete list of those arrested includes:

  • Mehul alias Monu Rahate (27) from Itwari

In a decisive response to the tragedy, the police have sealed the Dabo Club, citing its prior history of creating disturbances. Additionally, in a move to prevent similar violence during the upcoming celebrations, Nagpur police have imposed a temporary ban on rooftop parties across the city ahead of New Year's Eve. This action underscores the administration's intent to maintain strict order.

The case has sent shockwaves through the city, highlighting concerns over nightlife safety and the influence of well-connected individuals. The investigation continues as police piece together the full sequence of events from the fateful Christmas party.
