Nagpur Community Unites in Grief Over Teen's Tragic Murder

In a powerful display of solidarity, residents from diverse communities in Nagpur's Gittikhadan area came together on Sunday to mourn the death of 14-year-old Atharva Nanore, a Class 8 student whose body was discovered stuffed in a sack on Saturday. The preliminary autopsy report, received on Sunday, confirmed that the boy was strangulated with a cloth, with clear compression marks visible on his neck, sparking widespread outrage and urgent demands for justice.

Outpouring of Grief Transcends Social Divisions

The boy's body arrived at the locality from the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at 3 pm on Sunday, triggering an emotional outpouring that bridged caste and religious lines. Hundreds of mourners stood shoulder-to-shoulder in a final farewell, consoling each other while speculating about the motive and identity of the perpetrator. "We want justice for Atharva," shouted several residents, echoing the collective pain over the loss of an innocent young life.

Congress leader Rizwan Khan Moovi, standing with Bablu Tiwari, a key office-bearer of the local Hanuman temple, noted, "Everyone hit the streets for Atharva," highlighting the community's unified response. The funeral procession proceeded to Mankapur Ghat for the last rites, with family members, visibly shattered, supported by relatives and locals during the rituals.

Police Investigation Focuses on Insider Suspects

Police are actively investigating the motive behind the murder, probing whether it was an insider's job. Investigators are puzzled by information that Atharva reportedly went with the perpetrator without resistance or protest, suggesting the boy knew and trusted that person. This has led police to suspect the murderer could be someone from inside the family or a close relative.

Since the body was decomposing, it became difficult to gather additional forensic evidence or detect other injuries, complicating the case. However, several teams from Gittikhadan police station have been formed to crack it quickly:

  • One team is scanning all CCTV footage from the area.
  • Another is questioning the father's business associates.
  • The cyber cell is thoroughly examining call details, phone locations, and other digital records.
  • Police teams are also examining cloth fibres from the scene for clues.

Key Details and Security Measures

Atharva was kidnapped from the Gittikhadan area on April 2 during Hanuman Jamnotsav celebrations. His body was discovered inside a sack with hands and legs tied together on the Bharatwada overbridge on the ring road on April 4 afternoon. A puzzling aspect is the time gap in the discovery; the police patil (warden) of Bharatwada stated he did not see any sack on the overbridge when he crossed it on the morning of April 3.

Investigators found that the mobile phone location of a relative was traced near Mahurzhari, close to where the body was discovered. When questioned, the relative claimed he went there to search for the boy, and police are interrogating him further. Police are also examining whether any family issues led to the murder.

On Sunday, heavy security arrangements were implemented, with a large number of police officers, riot control commandos, and women constables deployed at Gittikhadan Chowk, along with a surveillance van equipped with CCTV cameras to monitor the situation.
