Nagpur Police Cracks Down on T20 World Cup Betting Operation

In a significant crackdown on illegal gambling activities, the Nagpur police crime branch successfully dismantled an active online cricket betting operation that was linked to the ongoing T20 World Cup. The raid, conducted on Friday in the Hingna area, led to the arrest of four individuals, including a former online food delivery executive who had switched careers in pursuit of making quick money.

Luxury Bungalow Served as Betting Den

The illicit betting den was strategically set up at a luxury bungalow located in the Kothewada, Gumgaon area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Hingna police station. This upscale location was used to facilitate the illegal operations, highlighting the sophisticated nature of the setup.

Under the leadership of DCP Rahul Maknikar, a team led by Senior PI Shubhangi Deshmukh meticulously laid a trap to apprehend the accused. The police caught the individuals red-handed while they were actively accepting bets through various mobile phone applications, demonstrating the modern and tech-savvy methods employed in this criminal enterprise.

Arrested Individuals and Their Backgrounds

The four arrested persons have been identified as:

  • Badal Kurhadkar (35) from Golibar Chowk, who previously worked as a food delivery man before turning to betting for faster financial gains.
  • Rahul Wadhwani (36) from Bilaspur, involved in the operation.
  • Lomesh Arora (26) from Kotwali, another key participant.
  • Amjad Khan Pathan (48) from Bhaldarpura, who was earlier employed as a salesman at a cracker shop before joining the betting ring.

This diverse group of individuals, with backgrounds ranging from delivery services to retail sales, underscores how the lure of quick money can drive people from various walks of life into illegal activities. The police have seized evidence from the scene, including mobile phones and other electronic devices used in the betting process.

The ongoing T20 World Cup has seen a surge in such illegal betting activities, with authorities stepping up vigilance to curb these practices. The Nagpur police's successful operation sends a strong message against gambling and highlights the risks associated with seeking illicit financial shortcuts.
