Nagpur Cyber Cell Intensifies Crackdown on Fuel Shortage Misinformation
The Cyber Cell of the Nagpur city police has significantly ramped up its efforts to combat the spread of misinformation on social media platforms, specifically targeting false claims about fuel shortages that have led to widespread panic buying among citizens. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Cyber) Lohit Matani has issued a stern warning, urging the public to avoid sharing any unverified information regarding fuel availability or issues related to ongoing global conflicts, such as the war involving Israel and Iran.
Surveillance and Action Against Misleading Posts
Over the past week, the cyber patrolling team conducted extensive scans of social media, reviewing more than 420 posts. From this analysis, they identified 90 posts that were related to alleged shortages of petrol and LPG cylinders. Out of these, six posts were flagged as particularly harmful, removed from the platforms, and the respective local police stations were promptly alerted for further investigation.
DCP Lohit Matani emphasized, "We will now initiate legal action against those responsible for spreading such misinformation." He added that the team is not only focusing on fuel-related rumors but is also vigilantly monitoring communally sensitive content, especially posts that exploit the ongoing war situation to create unnecessary fear and panic.
Continuous Monitoring to Prevent Escalation
Matani highlighted that the surveillance efforts are continuous and proactive. "Our surveillance is continuous. We are keeping a close watch on various social media platforms to curb rumors before they have a chance to escalate into larger issues," he stated. He noted that such misleading posts often take advantage of global events, like the Israel-Iran conflict, to manipulate public sentiment and trigger unwarranted anxiety.
The police are leveraging relevant cyber laws to take strict action against violators, aiming to maintain public order and prevent the spread of false information that could disrupt daily life. This crackdown is part of a broader initiative to ensure that social media remains a space for responsible communication, free from malicious intent that could harm community harmony.
