Nagpur Police Seeks Judicial Magistrate Statements in NGO Harassment Case
In a significant development in Nagpur, the Mankapur police approached the court on Monday to obtain permission for recording the statements of four survivors before a judicial magistrate. This move pertains to the ongoing sexual harassment case involving Riyaz Fazil Qazi, the president of a Zingabai Takli-based NGO, who is currently in police custody.
New Dimension: Dual Religious Practices Uncovered
Adding a complex layer to the investigation, police revealed that a relative of one of the complainants has been following dual religious practices for nearly a decade. Initially, there was confusion among investigators about whether this individual was coerced into conversion. However, authorities have clarified that the kin voluntarily adopted certain religious practices of another community approximately ten years ago.
The accused, arrested last Saturday, faces charges in the First Information Report (FIR) for sexual harassment, attempting to impose religious practices on employees, hurting religious sentiments, and outraging their modesty.
Police Conduct Searches and Seize Evidence
On Monday, law enforcement officials conducted thorough searches at the office of the NGO, which claims to work for underprivileged children. During the operation, police seized multiple mobile phones, laptops, and several documents. Sources indicate that preliminary statements from the four survivors have already been recorded by the police.
To strengthen the evidentiary value and ensure admissibility in court, investigators are now pushing for the statements to be formally recorded before a judicial magistrate under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Controversy and Calls for Broader Investigation
While NGO operators maintain that their work is genuinely focused on the welfare of underprivileged children, the case has sparked sharp reactions from various quarters. A section of right-wing activists has demanded a thorough investigation by intelligence agencies into the funding sources of the NGO and its alleged links to the Shaheen Bagh agitation.
Police officials have stated that the probe is progressing on multiple fronts. The seized electronic devices and documents are currently being examined to gather additional evidence. The court is expected to set a date soon for recording the statements of the four survivors.
Community Reactions and Ongoing Debate
The developments have ignited intense debate across Nagpur, with various communities calling for a fair and transparent investigation. The case continues to unfold as authorities work to piece together the full scope of the allegations and ensure justice for the survivors.
