Nagpur Police Seize 148kg of Banned Scented Tobacco in Major Raid
In a significant enforcement action, the Umred police, in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Nagpur, recovered a substantial quantity of banned scented tobacco during a targeted raid on a grocery shop in Sonejari Nagar, Umred. The operation, which took place on April 21, led to the seizure of 148 kilograms of the prohibited substance, with an estimated market value of ₹2.48 lakh.
Joint Operation Uncovers Illegal Stockpile
The raid was a coordinated effort between local law enforcement and regulatory authorities, highlighting the ongoing crackdown on the sale of banned tobacco products across Maharashtra. The recovered items, which were stored for commercial sale, directly contravene state government orders and the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This legislation strictly prohibits the distribution and sale of such scented tobacco due to public health concerns.
Arrest Made in Connection with the Case
Following the discovery, authorities arrested the accused, identified as Jaggu Shahu, a 40-year-old resident of Sonejari Nagar and the owner of the grocery shop. Shahu has been charged with violating the statewide ban on scented tobacco, which aims to curb the use of these harmful products. The arrest underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating such offenses, as they pose significant risks to consumer safety and public health.
Background on the Statewide Ban
The Maharashtra government has implemented stringent measures to ban scented tobacco under its regulatory framework, aligning with national food safety standards. The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, provides the legal basis for such prohibitions, emphasizing the need to protect citizens from hazardous substances. Despite these clear directives, illegal sales continue to be a challenge, prompting regular inspections and raids by police and FDA teams.
This incident in Umred serves as a reminder of the persistent efforts required to enforce these bans effectively. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to the sale of banned tobacco products, reinforcing the community's role in supporting law enforcement initiatives.
