In a decisive midnight action, the Ajni police in Nagpur successfully intercepted an e-rickshaw and confiscated a significant haul of the banned nylon kite string, commonly known as 'manja'. The operation, which unfolded in the early hours of December 21, led to the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of contraband valued at a substantial amount.
The Midnight Trap and Seizure
Acting on a specific tip-off regarding the illegal transportation of the hazardous kite string, officers from the Ajni police station laid a strategic trap in the Railway Colony area. Around 1:45 am on December 21, their vigilance paid off when they stopped an e-rickshaw for inspection.
The search revealed a large consignment of the prohibited material. The police recovered 120 pieces of the banned nylon manja. The market value of the seized kite string was estimated to be approximately ₹1.2 lakh.
Accused Apprehended and Assets Confiscated
The police swiftly took the two occupants of the e-rickshaw into custody. The arrested accused were identified as Aihtesham Khan and Mohammad Mehboob Sheikh, both residents of Kalamna in Nagpur.
In addition to the banned manja, the police also confiscated other items from the accused. Two mobile phones and the e-rickshaw used in the transportation were seized. The total value of all confiscated items, including the manja, phones, and vehicle, amounted to ₹3.4 lakh.
Ongoing Crackdown and Public Safety
This seizure is part of a continued crackdown by law enforcement agencies against the manufacture, sale, and use of Chinese manja and other banned nylon kite strings. These strings, often coated with glass or metal, pose a severe threat to birds, animals, and even humans, causing fatal injuries during the kite-flying season.
The police action underscores the commitment to enforcing the ban and preventing the circulation of dangerous materials. The accused are expected to face legal proceedings under relevant sections of the law for possessing and attempting to trade in the prohibited substance.
