Nagpur Police Uncover Cousin Rape Case Through Mobile Phone Analysis and Persistence
In a distressing case from Nagpur, mobile phone records and unwavering police determination were instrumental in breaking a family's silence surrounding the alleged sexual abuse of a 17-year-old girl by her 25-year-old cousin. The incident came to light after the Class 12 student, during her HSC board examinations, was diagnosed with an advanced pregnancy. She later delivered a stillborn baby at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on March 17.
A case was promptly registered at the Kotwali police station under relevant legal sections and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. However, the investigation faced significant hurdles as the survivor and her family initially refused to disclose any details, repeatedly asserting that the girl had not left the house.
Initial Challenges and Family Resistance
For nearly a week, investigators received no cooperation from the family. Compounding the difficulty, the girl was declared medically unfit to record her statement in the initial days following the delivery. Even after she recovered, she allegedly avoided answering questions, seemingly in an attempt to shield the perpetrator.
Suspecting the involvement of someone known to the family, police conducted repeated visits to the residence and closely monitored movements. The breakthrough came when investigators meticulously analyzed mobile phone records. The girl had been using her mother's phone, which revealed frequent chats and prolonged calls to a specific number. This number was traced to her maternal cousin, raising immediate suspicions.
Evidence Gathering and Corroboration
Despite this discovery, the family continued to deny any wrongdoing. Undeterred, police examined tower location data, which showed that the girl's and her cousin's phones were at the same location for several hours on a day in July 2025. This location was identified as a hotel in the Hudkeshwar area. Hotel records further corroborated that the girl and her cousin had checked in together, providing crucial physical evidence.
Confronted with the overwhelming evidence—including call records, location data, and hotel documentation—the survivor eventually confessed to police. She revealed that her cousin had sexually assaulted her at the hotel, which led to the pregnancy and subsequent stillbirth.
Police Leadership and Key Insights
The investigation was led by woman police sub-inspector Shital Jasud, under the supervision of senior inspector Ritesh Aher and Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Madane. Senior inspector Aher praised Jasud's efforts, stating, "Jasud played a key role in solving the case. She showed great patience and skill even though she is still a probationary officer."
The accused cousin is now in police custody, and further investigation is ongoing. A senior official commented on the broader implications, noting, "This case shows how families sometimes try to protect the accused person when sexual assault happens inside the family." This highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in domestic abuse cases, where familial loyalty can obstruct justice.
