The stoppage was a direct protest by clerical staff following a serious incident where one of their colleagues was allegedly threatened and abused by an agent on the premises a day earlier.
Incident of Abuse and Threats Halts Operations
The trouble began on Wednesday when an agent approached a clerk at the RTO East office regarding some pending work. According to sources, the interaction quickly turned hostile. The agent started hurling abuses at the government employee. The situation escalated further when the clerk was sitting outside the office premises later. The same agent approached him again and issued threats of dire consequences.
Staff Protest Leads to Major Citizen Inconvenience
In response to this alarming incident, several clerks and officials at the RTO East office collectively decided to stop work on Thursday. This protest action severely impacted the daily operations of the office. Citizens visiting the RTO for various essential tasks like driving licenses, vehicle registrations, and permits faced major inconvenience due to the sudden work stoppage. The protest underscored the tensions that can sometimes exist between public service providers and intermediaries.
Police Intervention and Consensus Reached
Following the protest, the threatened clerk, accompanied by some colleagues, approached the Kalamna police station to formally register a case against the agent. However, the matter was resolved through discussion. A senior police official confirmed that both parties involved in the dispute reached a mutual consensus. As a result of this agreement, a First Information Report (FIR) was not registered in the end. While normalcy was expected to return, the incident highlighted the need for safety and respect for government staff performing their duties.
