Nagpur: Second Infant Body Found Dumped at Garbage Heap in 15 Days
In a deeply disturbing incident, the body of a male infant was discovered dumped at a garbage heap in the Mohan Nagar area under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station in Nagpur on Thursday morning. This marks the second such case reported in the city within the past 15 days, raising serious concerns about illegal abandonment and potential infanticide.
Discovery and Immediate Response
The infant's body was found near a shrine in Khalasi Line. A local woman, while discarding garbage, stumbled upon the tiny body. Shocked by the grim discovery, she immediately raised an alarm, which attracted a crowd of onlookers to the scene.
Sadar police, accompanied by a forensic team, rushed to the spot promptly. They conducted a detailed panchnama (inquest report) to document the evidence and circumstances surrounding the discovery.
Preliminary Findings and Police Action
The preliminary examination by authorities revealed that the infant was male, with an estimated gestational age of around 8 months. The body was subsequently shifted to Mayo Hospital for further procedures.
Sadar Police have registered a case of accidental death and have initiated a comprehensive investigation. The primary objectives are to identify the responsible individual and uncover the exact circumstances that led to the abandonment of the infant.
Challenges in Investigation and Public Appeal
Senior Inspector Amol Deshmukh of Sadar police station highlighted the challenges faced in the investigation. He noted that the area, predominantly inhabited by low-income groups, lacks CCTV coverage, making it difficult to gather visual evidence.
"We are appealing to the public for any information that could help trace those involved," Inspector Deshmukh stated. "The exact cause of the death will only be clear after the postmortem report. All angles, including foul play, are being examined in the matter."
Pattern of Similar Incidents
This incident is not isolated. Just a few days ago, a similar case was reported in the jurisdiction of Ambazari police station in Nagpur. That case remains unresolved, adding to the urgency and alarm over these recurring discoveries.
The back-to-back incidents within a short span have sparked fears among residents and authorities alike about possible illegal abandonment or even infanticide in the region. The police are treating both cases with high priority to prevent any further such tragedies.
As the investigation continues, the community is urged to come forward with any relevant information that could assist the police in solving these heartbreaking cases and ensuring justice for the innocent victims.
