Missing Nainital Woman Rescued from Bijnor, Accused Arrested for Kidnapping and Assault
In a significant development, a 19-year-old woman who had been missing from Nainital for nearly three months was successfully traced to Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh and brought back on Sunday. The rescue operation culminated in the arrest of a man at the Delhi-Bijnor border, who is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting the victim.
Communal Tension and Political Involvement
The case has ignited communal tension in parts of the region, drawing political attention. On Saturday, the woman's father, accompanied by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), filed a formal complaint at the Bhowali police station. The complaint alleged that a youth from the minority community, employed at a local barber shop, had lured his daughter and attempted to coerce her into religious conversion.
The family reported that the woman recently contacted them, claiming she had been forcibly taken and assaulted. This allegation added fuel to the already sensitive situation, prompting immediate police action.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Following the complaint, Station House Officer Prakash Singh Mehra constituted two special teams to locate the missing woman. An initial First Information Report (FIR) was registered under BNS section 140, which pertains to kidnapping.
In her detailed statement to the police, the woman alleged that when she asked the accused to marry her, he assaulted and threatened her. Based on this testimony, additional charges were filed under BNS sections 69 (sexual intercourse by deceitful means), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and 352 (intentional insult).
After undergoing a medical examination, the accused was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody, marking a critical step in the legal process.
Political Reactions and Demands
The incident has drawn sharp political reactions, with BJP representatives actively supporting the family and alleging a broader pattern of targeting women in the area. They have called for strict verification of "outsiders" residing in the region to prevent similar occurrences.
MLA Sarita Arya emphasized that such incidents must not be tolerated and urged authorities to take stringent action against those found guilty. She also advocated for the identification and scrutiny of suspicious individuals to enhance community safety.
Ongoing Investigation
Police officials have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with further action to be taken based on evidence and due legal process. The case remains under close scrutiny as authorities work to ensure justice is served and to address the underlying tensions it has exposed.
