Namakkal Police Bust Interstate Drug Racket, Seize 16 Kg Ganja
In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Pallipalayam police in Namakkal district conducted a major operation on Thursday, resulting in the seizure of 16 kilograms of ganja valued at approximately Rs 2 lakh. The police also arrested six individuals involved in the smuggling network, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trade in the region.
Early Morning Raid Leads to Major Bust
Acting on a credible tip-off, police teams launched an intensive check on government and private buses along the Trichy-Erode National Highway during the early hours of Thursday. The operation was strategically timed to intercept the illicit consignment before it could be distributed further.
Initial Arrests and Seizure
During the checks, authorities intercepted a private bus and apprehended two men from Bihar who were found in possession of the ganja. The duo, identified as Motilal Shakani, 31, and Vishal Kumar, 26, both farmers by profession, were allegedly smuggling the drugs after being contacted by buyers based in Tamil Nadu. This initial breakthrough provided crucial leads for the subsequent phase of the investigation.
Expanded Investigation Nets Four More Accused
Based on information extracted from Shakani and Kumar, the police swiftly expanded their operation, leading to the arrest of four additional suspects. These individuals have been identified as Ramesh, 38, from Dharmapuri district; Harish, 22, from Konnaiyar near Tiruchengode; another Ramesh, 30, from Mettur; and Karthi, 36, from Salem. Their involvement points to a coordinated interstate smuggling racket spanning Bihar and Tamil Nadu.
Judicial Custody and Legal Proceedings
All six arrested individuals have been remanded to judicial custody as the investigation continues. Police are probing deeper into the network to uncover potential links to larger drug syndicates and identify other accomplices. The seizure and arrests underscore the persistent challenges of drug trafficking and the proactive measures being taken by law enforcement agencies.
This operation not only disrupts a key supply chain but also sends a strong message against drug-related crimes in the area. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help curb such illegal trade.
